"I Want You"
By Jerry Benét Embry
When we were kids, we used to live right next door to each other
Sitting on the curb laughin and playin. Me crackin jokes and sayin… How big your head was…. That’s was because… I didn’t know how to say…
Well… That was a long time ago and I am not that little boy anymore…
Now I can say with all my expression that’s my possession, relay to you my confession and say to you without question… That I want you….
I can say… I want you like the ‘cloud’ wants the ‘wind’
Like ‘best’ wants ‘friend’, like ‘lotion’ wants ‘skin’
Like a beginning that has no end…
I can say… I want you like ‘hair’ wants ‘style’
Like ‘worth’ wants ‘while’, like a man that’ll walk a mile
Just to enjoy the radiance of your smile…
I can say… I want you like ‘chocolate’ wants a ‘chip’
Like ‘marital’ wants ‘bliss’, like ‘French’ wants ‘kiss’
Like ‘curves’ want ‘hips’, Like a junkie I’m feenin’… Not for drugs
But for a taste of your lips.
I can say… I want you like a ‘sock’ wants a ‘shoe’
Like the grass seeking after the morning dew
Like the old school song "If Only You Knew"
Like how a ‘love’ wants a ‘you’.
It’s funny because, I even started watching the way I dress
Just in case of the off chance I see you, I want to be at my best
Being more and not less cause you are the only one I’m trying to impress.
See Baby, we aren’t those little kids anymore…
You are a woman now, and I… I’m a man
And as a man I can take this stand to hopefully one day hold your hand and say
I want you.
Who do you think you are not?
Who do you think you are not? Do you not think that you are the joy and light of the world your
world? Do you not think that you are the one that you have been waiting for. The one who will
show up in all of your glory and offer to you all that you could possibly need or want or desire. Just
who do you think you are not? Are you not the one who has been there for you hold you up
pushing you on encouraging you applauding you. Who did that for you if not you? Who was there
when you cried and ached and believed in the depths of your being that you could not, you simply
would not make it through another day and you said "oh yes you will". And you gave whatever was
needed whenever it was needed to get you back on track. Who do you think is responsible for how
you are growing, how you have grown, all that you have learned and grasped and now understand
and realize. Which has put a new song in your heart as you walk on a new path. Just who do you
think you are not? And why isn’t being who you are as a child of God good enough for you if its
good enough for God
